    Maintaining vBulletin 3.8.4

    2010 - 01.20

I’ve been hesitant on posting this… because once I do, that makes it “final” and I’ve been secretly hoping that something would change, but it hasn’t…

If you follow me on Twitter, you’ll probably have seen my recent tweet about FFCC’s vBulletin License expiring.

This post is going to expand on that.

I’ll not be renewing or upgrading to vBulletin 4 on this particular license. I have no reason too. The vBulletin 4 product is not up to par with the standards I’m requiring to be run on that site, and I simply do not have the time to learn everything about it. Therefore, I had to sit and make a decision on what I’m going to do about FFCC’s Forum.

    “Longstanding” vBulletin Customers

    2009 - 11.13

I was going to put this in my signature, because I want to show the Anti-IB people how irritating it is to see childish and condescending statements all over the fucking place. It got too long, so here’s a nice rant.

My original signature statement was this: “Do you consider yourself a loyal customer? Oh, you do? Guess what, then? You’re not special. Get over yourself and your need to constantly state that you are better than those who joined yesterday.”

Anyway, if any of you frequent the vBulletin.com Community, then you will have, undoubtedly, seen a post or two or a million from people who claim they are “long standing” and “loyal” customers. Here’s a nice example from the newest member of my Ignore List, Grover:

This is indeed an abolute must. We (long standing customers) have been asking and asking and asking for a much better Paid Subscription system for years. (Just do a search in the now closed vBulletin Suggestions and Feedback forum). vBulletin really needs to become much more sophisticated in regards of monetizing our websites.

    Source

    Emphasis mine.

What the flying fuck does this mean, anyway? You’ve been around since 2001? So?

What does your join date have shit to do with what should or should not go into this product?

I mean seriously, every fucking person who posts and says anything along the lines of “I’m a long standing customer” immediately goes on the ignore list.

If you want input on the company, go buy some IB shares and bring that shit up in Shareholders meetings. That’s why it’s there.

Sure, you can suggest shit. You can suggest all you want, but do not fucking say/insinuate/claim that long-standing customers should be listened to more than people who have joined yesterday.

You are not fucking special. If you want something to get into vBulletin, act like a civilized human being, and just suggest it. There’s no need to constantly shout that you’ve been around for one hundred million years, because really, no one cares.

    [/rant]

Usual caveats apply. My house, my rules. Say something stupid in a comment, it won’t get posted.

Also, for the record, I highly disagree with the suggestion that quote came from. I don’t need, and I don’t know any forum admins who do need it.

Integrating the FFCC Site into the vBulletin Blog and Vice Versa.

    2009 - 06.09

Because I’m a lazy bastard and I don’t feel like creating a web interface for posting news to the FFCC site, I’m just going to make the vB Blog do it.

The plan is, when an entry is posted to a specific blog (User FFCC’s blog on the forums) the entry will be posted on the Main Site via a database insert on the main sites database.

The database will contain the essential information. Title, Poster’s ID, Content, etc. etc. but it will also contain the blog entry it is linked too.

On the main site, the comments to each news posts will actually be the comments linked to that blog entry. And comments from both ends will show up in both places.

For example, if user A comments on a news post via the main site, then that comment will also show up on the linked Blog Entry on the forums. If user B comments on the Blog Entry via the forums, then that comment will also show up on the main site.

What I’m hoping, is that I can eliminate a lot of unnessicary coding but still provide the site with a full article posting and commenting system via the vBulletin Blog’s Data Managers.

This will also allow my News Reporters to post news on the main site without having to create a permissions system for the main site and without giving them any FTP access as well.

This is quite possibly the best idea I’ve ever had, now hopefully the vBlog will be up to the challenge.

Message Board Software and Default Themes (Rant)

    2009 - 02.03
Recently I was browsing the MyBB Community Forums cuz I was just overall bored, and posted this post in regards to Default Themes for Message Board Software. It’s already received two posts in reply about how it’s the truth and there was this post from “atomicj” asking me to tell the world.

Well, here ya go atomicj, this is me telling the world.

Stop using a theme that 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 other people use! You are not supposed to like the default theme of any software. Therefor, it is not original and downright stupid to install MyBB and put a vBulletin clone theme over top of it. (I hope the LiteBulletin Developers are listening…)

A few years back I wrote a very good article about creating a good theme for your forums. You may follow the link below to read it and for god’s sake. Take my advice.

Tips on creating your own theme

In conclusion, I can tell you that if I come across a MyBB that uses the vBulletin Default as it’s theme, I close the window immediately. The same applies to any forum running any software. For fucks sake add some originality to your forums people! You’re supposed to be Webmasters. At least fucking study the field before diving headlong into it.

Rant over, tune in next week when I rant about idiots who get pissed off when their brand new site doesn’t have a zillion users the week after it’s open.
