    Maintaining vBulletin 3.8.4

    2010 - 01.20

I’ve been hesitant on posting this… because once I do, that makes it “final” and I’ve been secretly hoping that something would change, but it hasn’t…

If you follow me on Twitter, you’ll probably have seen my recent tweet about FFCC’s vBulletin License expiring.

This post is going to expand on that.

I’ll not be renewing or upgrading to vBulletin 4 on this particular license. I have no reason too. The vBulletin 4 product is not up to par with the standards I’m requiring to be run on that site, and I simply do not have the time to learn everything about it. Therefore, I had to sit and make a decision on what I’m going to do about FFCC’s Forum.

    Memory Leak Issues

    2010 - 01.17

So, for the past couple weeks I noticed that after about 3 or 4 hours of usage, one of the programs I use on a regular basis was having Memory Leak issues. Normally I just shrug it off and continue about my merry way, because I have better things to do than to find the source of the issue.

Well, it started happening today. I could feel the usual slowness coming on so this time, I decided to see which one was having the issues.

Lo and behold, the culprit was none other than Firefox. Now, I’m not saying that this is a new issue but, didn’t they claim this as fixed in 3.0? Guess not…

With 6 tabs open, Firefox was using a good 350 Megabytes of RAM. … say what?

So, of course, to debug the issue, I killed a couple tabs in Firefox. And, of course, the RAM usage stayed the same.

So, I told Mike about it and that when Opera implements CSS3, I’ll be permenantly switching to that.

He suggested I try out Flock again, which is a browser I used a lot a year or two ago. I was hesitant because it’s base is Firefox 3.0, not 3.5. I tried it anyway, and to my amusement when I signed into Facebook. A bar on the side popped with my Account info and the Live Feed.

So, I thought, that’s pretty awesome! And then Mike suggested I try Twitter as well, and sure enough, I logged into Twitter and boom, another Tab in the sidebar with my Twitter info as well as my Twitter feed.

Then, I did the scalability test in Flock. I opened my same six tabs that I had in Firefox, and looked at the Task Manager.

With Facebook and Twitter open in the sidebar, as well as FFCC, my blog, my blog control panel, my private IBB Alpha board, vBulletin.com, and AdminAddict.net open in browser tabs, Flock used a grand total of 110 Megabytes of RAM. Less than 3x that of Firefox, and Firefox didn’t even have the Facebook and Twitter stuff.

Even now, I’ve closed all tabs except for my blog and blog control panel. And Flock is now using 95 MB to 100 MB of RAM.

So, yeah, I’ve switched to Flock. :D

    Stuff to look forward too…

    2010 - 01.12

k, so, I’ve been ranting a lot lately. Let’s break that chain.

Here’s a list of stuff to look forward too from me!

    1. ImperialBB Development Update. The contents of which will be determined after our staff meeting.
    2. ImperialBB 1.0.0 Alpha unveiling. Within the next month or two we plan to upgrade the community at www.imperialbb.com to ImperialBB 1.0.0 Alpha 1. (Barring any unforeseen issues, of course).
    3. Final Fantasy Crystal Cosmo getting content. A few of us at FFCC have been assigned a game to start writing content for. So expect to see some games pop up soon!
    4. The Glass Prison’s Future. I’ve got a few more plans for TGP. I can’t enact those until I get some money first.

So, there, some cool stuff to look forward too. :)

    Stuff to look forward too…

    Parents…

    2010 - 01.12

So, I’m sitting here thinking… and I think I just realized why I don’t tell my parents when I do something cool with one of my websites or ImperialBB.

Last time I did, I told my mother that I started designing and one of the pages I did, I was particularly proud of. That conversation went something like this:

Mom: “So what did you do all day?”

Me: “Well, I officially got promoted to Lead Designer a few days ago on the project I’ve been working on for two years, and everybody is really liking what I’ve done so far. I can’t wait to show them what I did today.”

Mom: “Are you getting paid for it?”

Me: “No, it’s a volunteer project, at the moment. No money in it right now.”

Mom: “Maybe you should spend less time on that and more time on looking for a job?

… thanks for the booster Mom.

Now, I know, I need a job. Duh, of course. Contrary to popular fucking belief, I do not enjoy sitting alone in this house all fucking day.

It seems like my parents think all I do is sit here and do nothing but play on my computer all day… but, the thing is, that is far from the truth. If a job opportunity comes up, I jump at it. You know how many rejection letters I’ve had to read in the past year? And I’m not talking about just freelancing. I’m talking about from places like Best Buy, Target, Staples, etc.

So, to any parent who is reading, do me a favor. Be interested in your childs life, regardless of their age. I fully believe that if my parents were more supportive of me, rather than their current “har-har get a job, quit being lazy” then I’d be a lot happier in my daily life.

Crystal Core – Crystal Network – The Future

    2009 - 12.11

As many of you may know, I run a multitude of sites. All ranging from this blog to my Final Fantasy site, as well as running the Technical aspect of The Glass Prison.

Let’s go back a ways. When I made my second coming to the internet world, I stated I was here to stay… and so far I’ve accomplished that (obviously… or I wouldn’t be typing this). And I’ve made my biggest mark to date, in the two short years I’ve been back.

Since my return I’ve started FFCC, started Evolution-X Productions (now deceased), became an Administrator (again) at The Glass Prison, became a developer for Imperial Bulletin Board, and have purchased domains for several other sites ranging from General Chat to TV and Movies.

I decided, a while ago, that I needed a way cumulatively manage all of these sites (minus Imperial… maybe <_<). I also wanted to network the sites, so that each one can promote the other.

Thus, Crystal Core is born. Crystal Core is an application framework that will be used to power the main website of every site I personally manage, and will provide a way for each site to interface with each other.

Crystal Core will have to capability to manage all types of content, ranging from Game Content and News Articles for FFCC, to Blogging for ryanashbrook.com, and everything in between.

On top of its content management capabilities, it will also feature the ability to integrate with vBulletin -and- Imperial Bulletin Board. All from the same framework, using the same code.

The code for Crystal Core is derived from what was going to be the Final Fantasy Crystal Cosmo site (hence the name “Crystal Core”).

However, with Crystal Core being built, I also wanted a way to network the sites so that, not only could they all promote each other, but they could integrate and share data with each other.

Thus, The Crystal Network is born. I have big plans for the core TCN website and how it will play into the rest of my sites. I also have plans for TCN to have it’s own unique content available. Along with plans for websites, outside of my jurisdiction, that wish to join the network.

So yeah… I’m fucking excited for the future. =D
