    ImperialBB Feature Spotlight: The Portal

    2010 - 02.26

Ok, anyone who knows me well, knows that there is one feature in ImperialBB that I’m particularly proud of. The Portal.

I programmed the Portal shortly after I joined the team in 2007. When I joined, the Portal already had a file and a template in SVN, but it had zero functionality. It just displayed the template, which was the base for what the Portal was supposed to look like.

So, I decided to go ahead and build it based on the specs given to me by others, as well as some of my own ideas. And I’m not afraid to say that, it’s by far one of my top 3 favorite features in ImperialBB. Big thanks to Mike, Christian, and James for letting me go completely apeshit with it. :D

Anyway, this blog post is going to explain the in and outs of the Portal. How it works, and what you can do with it if you have the knowledge.

    Skinning for ImperialBB

    2010 - 02.02

As promised, here is a post about skinning for ImperialBB.

Since I assumed the position of ImperialBB Designer several months ago, I’ve been neck deep in more CSS and HTML than I’ve ever been in my entire online career. This was a completely new experience for me. The only thing I’ve ever done in the past 6 years, as far as skinning is concerned, is color changes, HTML changes, and very few graphics here and there to things that were already pre-existing.

I was never extremely good at the graphic aspect, and I still don’t think I am. The postbit buttons in ImperialBB v1 are of my design, and I’m very critical of them. The rest of the team enjoy them, but every time I look at them, I find some other small flaw that just irritates the hell out of me. Those are going to be revisited today, because I have this little problem where I can’t stand to have something I’ve done be less than perfect.

    Huge ImperialBB Update!

    Stuff to look forward too…

    2010 - 01.12

k, so, I’ve been ranting a lot lately. Let’s break that chain.

Here’s a list of stuff to look forward too from me!

    1. ImperialBB Development Update. The contents of which will be determined after our staff meeting.
    2. ImperialBB 1.0.0 Alpha unveiling. Within the next month or two we plan to upgrade the community at www.imperialbb.com to ImperialBB 1.0.0 Alpha 1. (Barring any unforeseen issues, of course).
    3. Final Fantasy Crystal Cosmo getting content. A few of us at FFCC have been assigned a game to start writing content for. So expect to see some games pop up soon!
    4. The Glass Prison’s Future. I’ve got a few more plans for TGP. I can’t enact those until I get some money first.

So, there, some cool stuff to look forward too. :)

    Parents…

    2010 - 01.12

So, I’m sitting here thinking… and I think I just realized why I don’t tell my parents when I do something cool with one of my websites or ImperialBB.

Last time I did, I told my mother that I started designing and one of the pages I did, I was particularly proud of. That conversation went something like this:

Mom: “So what did you do all day?”

Me: “Well, I officially got promoted to Lead Designer a few days ago on the project I’ve been working on for two years, and everybody is really liking what I’ve done so far. I can’t wait to show them what I did today.”

Mom: “Are you getting paid for it?”

Me: “No, it’s a volunteer project, at the moment. No money in it right now.”

Mom: “Maybe you should spend less time on that and more time on looking for a job?

… thanks for the booster Mom.

Now, I know, I need a job. Duh, of course. Contrary to popular fucking belief, I do not enjoy sitting alone in this house all fucking day.

It seems like my parents think all I do is sit here and do nothing but play on my computer all day… but, the thing is, that is far from the truth. If a job opportunity comes up, I jump at it. You know how many rejection letters I’ve had to read in the past year? And I’m not talking about just freelancing. I’m talking about from places like Best Buy, Target, Staples, etc.

So, to any parent who is reading, do me a favor. Be interested in your childs life, regardless of their age. I fully believe that if my parents were more supportive of me, rather than their current “har-har get a job, quit being lazy” then I’d be a lot happier in my daily life.
