    Retarded Technicians

    2009 - 12.28

    Here’s the back story…

I have an entire family of friends that live a few houses down. I’ve known them for over a decade, and they are like my second family.

When they have an issue with their computer, they call me.

A month or two ago, they had an EPIC failure in their computer. I tried all I could to bring it back but unfortunately, I didn’t have the resources to do so. So, naturally, they took it to a technician who does.

    What does the technician do?

First, he simply swaps old parts onto a new motherboard and in a new case. Meh, ok. I can deal with that. I’ve done the same, in the name of “saving money.”

Second, he wipes the hard drive completely, with no attempt to recover old files. Had this been a hard drive failure like I had months ago, I would be able to deal with this… however this was not a hard drive failure. It was a corruption of the Operating System. The hard drive was still in good shape, therefore it could have been installed into a different PC as a slave drive to recover the files. This is PC Repair 101. No matter what, the client should be looked after. Therefore, if a format of the Hard Drive is needed, then all possible options to recover old files should be looked at, before just going in and doing it.

Third, the computer is locking up still. Brand new motherboard, brand new processor, and the damn thing locks up whenever it makes intense processes. Something tells me there is loose hardware in the computer, so now I gotta go in and make sure everything is locked in place.

I should mention, that the last time this guy worked on the computer, before he built them this new one, there were two PCI Cards and a memory module that were not fully installed, which caused the computer to lock up on occasion, which means they had to actively cut power in the middle of operation. Hence why it blew up.

    Moving on…

Fourth, he installs Windows XP. What the hell!? Really? You’re gonna charge them $450 for a new motherboard and basic dual core processor and install an OS that is 8 years old?

Look… no one cares about what your opinion is. They want the latest and the greatest, especially if you’re overcharging by $150 – $200.

Therefore, Windows Vista would’ve been the way to go. If they have issues, guess what? More business for you (or me, actually, considering I’ll not recommend this shop ever again).

And now… we move on to the part that really pissed me off the most…

The guy actively hid several security updates as well as the update for Internet Explorer 8.

    What. The. FUCK?

    Are you serious?

I literally had to sit for an hour or so while I downloaded and installed Windows Media Player, Internet Explorer 8, as well as about 10 to 15 Hotfixes and Security updates.

And no, these were not recent updates. They dated to well over 6 months ago. They were actively hidden from Windows Update. They had just gotten the computer the same day that I got on it and set it up.

    Let’s flash forward to now…

A week or so ago I asked my friend how it was running and he said this, and I quote.

It’s running great! Except it’s still locking up…

… umm… one would think that… if a “specialist” build the computer… the problems would go away… right?

    I guess not.

Needless to say, I’ll not be recommending this particular PC Repair Shop to anyone. I’m tired of cleaning up after them.

    Christmas Rant

    2009 - 12.21

    Christmas. Hanukkah. Kwanzaa.

What do all of these events have in common?

There are there to spread love and joy to those close to you. This is an absolutely great concept…

… only to be ruined by people who want to be politically correct.

So, listen up. I have a few words for all of you.

“Happy Holidays” Zealots – Fuck you.

“Merry Christmas” Zealots – Fuck you too.

Seriously, everyday during the month of December I have to hear someone bitch, moan, and complain about people saying one phrase over the other.

Cut the shit. If you really have nothing better to do than try to correct someone for using one phrase over the other, then you need to rethink the priorities in your life because OBVIOUSLY you have too much time on your hands.

This goes for both sides of the spectrum.

Happy Holidays – Oh yay. You’re trying to be all ‘merica, land of the free, home of the brave. Place for all equal rights. etc. etc.

Yeah. I got that. Awesome. Except…

… no one cares. Read: Land of Equal Rights. As in “No one gives a flying fuck if you wanna be all melting pot. I say what I want.”

Merry Christmas – Ahh… my Christians. How I love thee.

Look, it takes less effort to just ignore the aforementioned “melting pot” assholes, than it does to try and counter them.

I, personally, find it simply amazing that this is the phrase that causes the most shit. Really!?

“God bless you”, “Lord be with you”, and “I’ll be praying for you” are all phrases that automatically assume one believes in God. And yet… “Merry Christmas” is the one that pisses everyone off.

If everyone just stuck to their own guns and didn’t give a shit about the religious and political views of others, the world would be a helluva better place.

    [/rant]

As a side note, I vote we all just start saying Merry Christmahanukwanzaakkah and go on about our lives.

Crystal Core – Crystal Network – The Future

    2009 - 12.11

As many of you may know, I run a multitude of sites. All ranging from this blog to my Final Fantasy site, as well as running the Technical aspect of The Glass Prison.

Let’s go back a ways. When I made my second coming to the internet world, I stated I was here to stay… and so far I’ve accomplished that (obviously… or I wouldn’t be typing this). And I’ve made my biggest mark to date, in the two short years I’ve been back.

Since my return I’ve started FFCC, started Evolution-X Productions (now deceased), became an Administrator (again) at The Glass Prison, became a developer for Imperial Bulletin Board, and have purchased domains for several other sites ranging from General Chat to TV and Movies.

I decided, a while ago, that I needed a way cumulatively manage all of these sites (minus Imperial… maybe <_<). I also wanted to network the sites, so that each one can promote the other.

Thus, Crystal Core is born. Crystal Core is an application framework that will be used to power the main website of every site I personally manage, and will provide a way for each site to interface with each other.

Crystal Core will have to capability to manage all types of content, ranging from Game Content and News Articles for FFCC, to Blogging for ryanashbrook.com, and everything in between.

On top of its content management capabilities, it will also feature the ability to integrate with vBulletin -and- Imperial Bulletin Board. All from the same framework, using the same code.

The code for Crystal Core is derived from what was going to be the Final Fantasy Crystal Cosmo site (hence the name “Crystal Core”).

However, with Crystal Core being built, I also wanted a way to network the sites so that, not only could they all promote each other, but they could integrate and share data with each other.

Thus, The Crystal Network is born. I have big plans for the core TCN website and how it will play into the rest of my sites. I also have plans for TCN to have it’s own unique content available. Along with plans for websites, outside of my jurisdiction, that wish to join the network.

So yeah… I’m fucking excited for the future. =D
